Smail Gracanin

Smail Gracanin came to Vermont in 1997 from the former Yugoslavia. He moved to the U.S. with his wife and daughters. Vesna, one of his five daughters, says he missed home, but he was happy to move here.

"When you come here in that age, in late 60s, I think it's difficult. But he moved forward and made best of his life living here in these past 20 years. Oh he loved the nature! He loved Burlington, small town. My mom and him lived there, downtown. He loved to walk, going take care of his own groceries or pharmacies or, all that he did on his own. He built small group of friends. He love to go on the lake, him and my mom, and parks and loved dogs."

Smail Gracanin died on Dec. 21, 2020 at Converse Home in Burlington. He was 87.
