9/11 intensified my desire to explore the underlying conditions that give rise to violence.

9/11 was my 21st birthday. I was finishing up an internship working with an organization providing mobile legal services to survivors of domestic violence in rural Vermont and preparing to begin my final year at Dartmouth at the time. 9/11 intensified my desire to explore the underlying conditions that give rise to violence. I pursued this interest first through a senior thesis at Dartmouth and then through human rights work in Haiti. Ultimately, this work led me back to Vermont. 9/11 was often described as a unifying event for our generation. Living and working in rural Vermont illuminated the need for multiple narratives in understanding the forces that give rise to violence and shape its consequences.
